« on: July 25, 2012, 02:50:47 AM »

How about women staying at home, doing the cooking, taking care of family?

Most women who work, still do that, and do it gratis.

Free of cost. Women aren't paid anything for the work they do at home.

Nor are men. My Dad replaced a button board in our living room this past Sunday. The electrician had asked  Rs 600 for doing it. Dad didn't get anything and he did it, and I think he did a better job than this electrician man.

I buy grocery and things for Mom, sometimes many times a week. I don't get paid for it. Our neighbour has a live in maid, and they her 6000 rupees plus food plus a servant quarter plus clothes. And they pay for her treatment if she gets sick.

And what exactly does this live-in maid of your neighbour do?

But your Dad did something for himself, not for someone else. That electrician man makes a living by doing other peoples' work

The usual housework. Cleaning, dusting, doing the dishes, the laundry, fetching things from the supermarket.

That sounds like an expensive maid?

We live in Isloo. These people they come from the villages around the city, and they charge Rs, 800 to 1,000 for one job, I mean, cleaning is one job, Rs. 800 minimum, dusting another, and another 800, dishes a third and another 800 at least. Laundry and ironing the clothes two more, that makes 1600. This one lives with them 24/7 so they pay her 6000.

If she just came and did the work and went, she would be taking 4000 from them and if she did other houses she would be making more.

Danish, do you know what a cook, who does only cooking and nothing else, charges?  Anything between 6000 to 10,000.

But isn't that how things have always been? The men working and women staying at home and taking care of things.

It is not just simply staying at home and taking care of things. It is work.  If it is not done by mothers, sisters, wives and daughters, men need to pay out what Bashir here called 'good money' to have it done.
