I agree. The printed word has acquired a status and authenticity in our conditioning. This is not about to go away any time soon.

The question is basically bigger than just printed newspapers. It pertains to the printed word. In my opinion, the printed word will retain its interest for the seekers of knowledge.

The printed word, over centuries, has been invested with an aura of authority and authenticity.

My Granddad still gets all his information from the printed newspapers.  In fact, he dislikes computers intensely.

Archived copies of printed newspapers are themselves a world of fascination for researchers. While digital archiving is taking place around the world, not everything is archived. I can go to a library and request newspaper files 50, 60, 70 years old, even older and research classifieds in them any day. I am not sure whether such such material is being archived. Letters to the Editor are also a very important part of the contemporary sociology and history of the newspapers time of publication. Considering the sheer volume of newspapers that have been and are being published it would be asking too much that digital archives of every single item published be available on newspaper web sites.

My two bits.

Yes. It has given it new form, AND far more immediacy than it ever had.

That is very true. The Internet has made newspapers more current and relevant.  And also made archives accessible to far more people than ever before.

The wonderful thing about the Internet is that it combines the nurturing of the reading habit and skills with a wholly new skills yet, thus creating a new
type of human being.

Contrary to a lot that has been said in this topic, the printed newspaper will remain hale and hearty for the foreseeable future.

That sounds quite the thing. Despite the great leaps in IT, we are still seeing new print print publications being launched daily.

Nor am I ashamed of admitting that there is a bit of reassuring comfort in having neatly rolled up copies of the Times of India, The Hindu and The Indian Express under one's arm.

Similar is the case of having a copy of India Today spread open in front of one while one sips some excellent tea made by the wife every afternoon.
