Is it true that Pakistan is going into Internet Censorship?
« on: February 24, 2012, 03:35:17 PM »

I have heard that the Government of Pakistan is planning to institute a National Firewall to block undesirable Internet sites?

Would someone from Pakistan provide some concrete information?

Greetings Adman001

What you have heard is, sadly, true. The above is an advertisement published by the Government of Pakistan in various print media calling quotations from suppliers of such equipment and software.

I am also attaching the complete request RFP- URL Filtering & Blocking for proposal for the same.

We view even this call for such a proposal as a regressive step by the Government of Pakistan.

Various civil society organisations have registered protests against this proposed violation of fundamental rights of Pakistanis. We trust that supporters of individual and community freedoms worldwide will also add their voice against this insane and anti-people proposal.

Very often such steps are initiated by bureaucrats who are more loyal than the king

Pakistan is embroiled in war of attrition with a tenacious and highly tech savvy insurgent group supported by international subversive networks.

Their security concerns are understandable, but do not justify a blanket surveillance and stifling of freedom of expression and choice.

Censorship is, in any way, counter productive and leaves the door wide open for rumours and speculation.

Those sites were introducing objectionable elements into the lives of our youth. Don't wrong the PTA unjustly.

Do you even know they have blocked web sites like RapidShare, from where students downloaded tons of useful study material free of cost.

If you find something something objectionable stay from it. Why do you want to force everyone to stay away from it. What you find objectionable may not be objectionable for me.

If they do implement it, it would perhaps be the biggest blow to students and researchers

Its a shame that such shenanigans are happening right under the nose of a parliament that never tires of proclaiming its sovereignty
