On the face of it, they are simply trying to increase usage of their service.

It is good to such topics finding place here. On the pretext of increasing usage and with the carrot of those attractive prizes they are making people spend money which they would not spend on their services under ordinary circumstances. I agree totally with the topic starter.

Ten million. In the Indo-Pakistani system of counting we don't follow the 000 regime. After 10,000 we have 1,00,000 which is equal to 100,000 in the international system, and is called a lakh. A million is equal to ten lakhs and is written as 10,00, 000. A Crore is written as 1,00,00,000. In the international system it is equal to ten million  or 10,000,000

Thank you very much. This helps a lot.

Old habits die har. Many people in India and Pakistan still do their counting according to the traditional way.

So these phone companies are inducing people to dish out millions in extra usage through these schemes?

Its a simply case of laxity in law enforcement. I'm sure there must be a dozen laws in Pakistan (as there are in India) whereby these companies could be dragged to court.

Laws in Pakistan need to be revised to make them people-friendly. Four times the country has suffered military adventurers taking over the country for different durations. Every time they have tinkered with the laws.

I do wish the elected governments should have done something about this.

Elected governments are kept too busy fending off intrigues to do something useful for the people.

Is it true that all of Pakistan's telecommunications sector is owned by foreign companies?

All phone companies foreign controlled?   That sounds mighty strange!

All voice and data data is carried by these foreign companies. One is Norwegian owned, another is Chinese owned, three are owned by Arabs

Exactly behind the eight ball . . .

Pakistan has been in a state of war with itself all through its existence . . .

That is beside the point. How come such a strategic sector as telecommunications is entirely in foreign hands?  It is suicidal.

When a government is desperate to show some gains on the economy  front, welcomes any and every investor. Musharraf's malitary government was in exactly that situation, when they welcomed these rapacious investors. Pakistan's state-owned terestrial telecom corporation was sold away much earlier by Nawaz Sharif's government.

Making the right moves is the essence of success
